Ingmar Bergman’s autobiography The Magic Lantern (1987) was originally written in Swedish before being translated into English. Who does close-ups as well as Ingmar Bergman? Who gets that level of intensity and performance from actors and actresses? When you think about Bergman’s movies (the ideas, the acting, the composition of each frame, the editing) they are evidence of very fine filmmaking. No, I do not enjoy watching the films of Ingmar Bergman. He scrutinizes each nervous twitch and internal scream. Bergman reminds us of feelings we would like to forget. ![]() He likes to explore humanity at its weakest especially, when we are on our knees and at our most shameful. They see the world without sentimentality, through a lens where there is no God and no hope.īergman tends to focus his camera on the moments in life that are not so easily explained or ingested. Bergman’s characters always seem to be tortured and conflicted. I yell silently for the characters to snap out of their existential malaise. When they are playing, I divert my eyes from the screen. Films by Ingmar Bergman make me feel unsettled. ![]() I did not enjoy Through a Glass Darkly or Cries and Whispers. ‘Enjoy’ is the wrong word to use in this context. I will state up front that I do not enjoy watching the films of Ingmar Bergman. ![]()
